A new surveillance system, called Active Operator Guidance, is being developed by Det Norske Veritas (DNV), to help ship masters avoid the loss of containers. The system uses data on ship motions and wave loads predicted by the analysis tool WASIM, and checks that limits of hull loading, impact pressure, water on deck, motions and accelerations are not exceeded.
Loss of containers is a major financial liability to carriers, while drifting containers are a hazard to international shipping.
Voluntary speed reduction and course alterations are means to minimise the hull loading and motions of vessels for ships operating at 25 knots, thus reducing the risk of structural damage and loss of containers, the company says.
Major container ship operators are involved in the development and testing of the surveillance system. Wave condition is continuously monitored by the latest Miros wave radar technology.
