OTTAWA – Canada’s new Minister of Transport is astronaut Marc Garneau.
His appointment was announced Wednesday morning at Rideau Hall in Ottawa at Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s swearing-in ceremony.
The retired military officer, former astronaut, and engineer served as the Member of Parliament for the riding of Westmount—Ville-Marie since 2008.
Garneau was the first Canadian in outer space taking part in three flights aboard NASA Space shuttles. He was the president of the Canadian Space Agency from 2001 to 2006, and in 2003 was installed as the ninth Chancellor of Carleton University in Ottawa.
Under the Harper government, the Transport Minister was Lisa Raitt.
