For-hire carriers boost business

Canada-based long-distance for-hire carriers hauled 136 million metric tonnes of freight in the first two quarters of 2001, the latest Statistics Canada records indicate.

This represented a 2% increase compared with 133.3 million tonnes in the same period of 2000.

Although domestic activities accounted for 74% of total tonnage and 80 % of total shipments, trans-border movements generated 45% of total revenues earned and 49% of total tonne-kilometres for these carriers.
