EU, US sign agreement to expand container security initiative

The European Union and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have signed an agreement on April 22 that calls for the prompt expansion of Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) Container Security Initiative (CSI) throughout the European Community.

The agreement was signed by Homeland Security Secretary, Tom Ridge, and Irish Finance Minister, Charlie McCreevy, at the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington, DC.

The agreement aims to intensify and broaden customs co-operation and mutual assistance in customs matters between the European Community and the United States, with the objectives of expanding CSI, establishng minimum standards for risk-management techniques, and improving public and private partnerships to secure the logistics chain of international trade. The signing of the agreement comes as security fears have also been voiced about Asian sea lanes.
