Minister of Transport announces appointments to Pacific Pilotage Authority, Saint John Port Authority

OTTAWA, Ont.--The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Transport, has announced the appointment of Captain Michael W. Roman to the board of directors of the Pacific Pilotage Authority for a term of three years. 



OTTAWA, Ont.–The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Transport, has announced the appointment of Captain Michael W. Roman to the board of directors of the Pacific Pilotage Authority for a term of three years. 

The Pacific Pilotage Authority is a Crown corporation created in 1972 under the Pilotage Act. Its mandate is to provide safe, reliable and efficient marine pilotage and related services in the coastal waters of British Columbia, including the Fraser River.

Captain Roman began his marine career as a seaman on cannery tenders and small tugs in the Fraser River in 1975. In 1987, he was promoted to chief officer, and in 1995 he obtained his marine pilot’s licence. Since then, he has performed a variety of roles with the British Columbia Coast Pilots Ltd. He was first elected director in 2002, where he was responsible for pilot training and examinations and worked with the Canadian Coast Guard and other stakeholders to improve operations related to navigational safety. In 2007, he became vice-president, and in 2008 became president. In these roles, Captain Roman influenced the board’s decisions on financial, governance, and business management issues. He also acted as trustee for the company’s pension and benefit plans, said the announcement. 

Captain Roman is a member of the Canadian Merchant Service Guild acting as its vice president since 2009.

Melanie Bell Hughes appointed to the board of directors of the Saint John Port Authority

Raitt also announced the appointment of Melanie Bell Hughes to the board of directors of the Saint John Port Authority until December 2016.

Since 1995,  Bell Hughes has been owner and vice-president of Hughes Communications Inc., in Saint John, New Brunswick, handling marketing and advertising for corporate clients. Previously, she worked six years at NBTel as a promotions coordinator and a sales representative.

Bell Hughes holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of New Brunswick. She is a board member of the Rocmaura Foundation and also serves her community in the Rocmaura Family Council, and the Saint John Chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
