NEW YORK, NY--Patrick Foye, Executive Director of The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, announced the creation of a Port Performance Task Force this month, before more than 200 representatives from the maritime industry.

Foye said the new initiative was formed to provide an industry roundtable, a forum wherein all port constituents can discuss their common interest: efficient performance at the Port of New York and New Jersey. In addition, the Task Force will attempt to identify challenges to the port's efficiency before they occur and recommend potential solutions.

The Port Authority will chair the Task Force and provide the body's Secretariat. Representatives from labor management and the New York Shipping Association will serve as vice chairs while Port Authority senior staff members will facilitate working groups dedicated to terminal optimization, drayage operations, intermodal equipment, the Port's ExpressRail system, and port awareness/marketing.

In all, the Task Force will bring together terminal operators, ocean carriers, members of the International Longshoremen's Association, the New York Shipping Association, the Metropolitan Marine Maintenance Contractors Association, truckers, and other constituents.

The group's initial meeting has been planned for December 20, with recommendations from working groups tentatively scheduled for January 2014.
